CE, CSA, EAC, and ATEX: Which Certifications Does an Extrusion Project Need?

For a PVC extrusion project intended for overseas markets, extrusion line certification is closely connected with market access, electrical configuration, and on-site operating conditions. CE, CSA, EAC, and ATEX each address different compliance priorities, and their applicability varies with the project destination and factory environment. This article explains what these four certifications mean for PVC extrusion lines, what their assessments can involve, and how they relate to the actual line configuration.

Certifications Relevant to a PVC Extrusion Project

CE Certification: EU Equipment Conformity

CE certification commonly refers to CE marking, which indicates that the equipment has completed the conformity assessment required by applicable EU legislation. For a PVC extrusion line, CE focuses on the compliance of the final delivered configuration, including the safe coordination of extrusion, heating, drive, and control functions, as well as the overall management of mechanical, electrical, and electromagnetic compatibility risks.

The CE mark represents the compliance of the extrusion line as an integrated machinery system rather than the conformity of only one electrical component or individual function.

CSA Certification: Electrical Safety for Canadian Projects

CSA certification indicates that equipment has been evaluated according to applicable Canadian safety standards. For a PVC extrusion line, its main focus is generally the design of the electrical system, the application of electrical components, and circuit protection.

The evaluation can cover the main motor and drive circuits, PLC control circuits, heating and temperature-control circuits, low-voltage components, overcurrent protection, and grounding connections. CSA certification shows that the evaluated electrical configuration and its connections meet the electrical safety requirements applicable to Canadian projects.

EAC Certification: Compliance in EAEU Markets

EAC certification applies to equipment entering the markets of Eurasian Economic Union members, including Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Armenia, and Kyrgyzstan. EAC is the Union’s common market circulation mark, showing that a product has completed conformity assessment under the applicable technical regulations.

For a PVC extrusion line, these requirements can cover machinery safety, low-voltage electrical safety, and electromagnetic compatibility. EAC focuses on whether the final delivered line configuration complies with the technical rules shared by the member states, allowing the same conformity assessment result to support access to the relevant EAEU markets.

ATEX Certification: Hazardous-Area Protection

ATEX certification applies to equipment and protective systems intended for use in potentially explosive atmospheres in the EU. For a PVC extrusion project, it focuses on whether the certified extrusion equipment provides explosion protection appropriate for its installation area.

The assessment can address potential ignition hazards arising during equipment operation, including electrical sparks, electrostatic discharge, and hot surfaces. ATEX marking indicates that the extrusion equipment within the certified scope has been assessed according to the applicable equipment category and explosion-protection requirements and is suitable for operation under the specified hazardous-area conditions.

How to Define the Certification Package for an Extrusion Project

To define the certification package for a PVC extrusion project, evaluate the final installation market, electrical configuration, operating environment, and scope of supply. These factors determine which market-access, electrical safety, explosion-protection, and local inspection requirements apply.

  • Final installation market: Identify the product conformity system and technical regulations recognized by the country or region where the line will operate.
  • Electrical configuration: Review the supply voltage and frequency, motor drives, PLC, temperature controls, and low-voltage components against local electrical requirements.
  • Operating environment: Determine whether the certified extrusion equipment will be installed in a classified hazardous area and identify the required explosion-protection level for equipment operating there.
  • Scope of supply: Define whether the assessment covers the extruder, specified equipment within the supply, the electrical control system, or the complete extrusion line.

Using the four certifications discussed in this article as examples, a PVC extrusion line supplied to the EU or EEA follows the applicable CE requirements. A Canadian project may specify CSA certification according to local electrical acceptance requirements, while equipment entering an EAEU market follows the applicable EAC conformity procedure.

If extrusion equipment in a European project will operate in a classified hazardous area, the equipment within that certification scope must also meet the applicable ATEX requirements. The same method can identify other national certifications or local approvals required for a specific project.
